Many users contract very fast internet services, especially now that the fiber optic infrastructure is being implemented anywhere. However, it must be taken into account that there is no use paying for a high-speed Internet service if the network adapter is not capable of supporting the contracted speed. In this type of case, our computer will become a speed limitation at which we browse the internet.

Every computer with Windows 10 connects to the internet thanks to a hardware called: Network Adapter. This network adapter can be Ethernet to connect via cable and a Wireless adapter for internet connections via WiFi. Like any other hardware, a network adapter has its own specifications, and those specifications play an important role in determining the connection speed you will get beyond the maximum browsing speed that your Internet service provides.
In this way, if the Internet speed contracted with your provider is equal to or less than the maximum speed that your computer’s network adapter is capable of managing, you will NOT have to worry since your computer is capable of browsing at the maximum speed of contracted internet.
On the other hand, if the maximum speed supported by your network adapter is a lower speed than the one contracted from your internet provider, then our computer will not allow us to navigate at the maximum contracted speed.
That said, below we want to show you step by step how to know the speed of the network adapter of your Windows 10 computer. You must bear in mind that network adapters can also be called a network card, Ethernet card or Wireless card or WiFi card:
How to know the connection speed of the network adapter
1. Connect your Windows 10 computer to the internet either by cable or by WiFi.
2. In Windows search, enter the following term: Control Panel.
3. Select the Control Panel from the search results.
4. Once here you will have to click on the option: Network and Internet.
5. In the new screen you will have to select: Center network and sharing.
6. Now the screen will show some information. In this case, you will have to focus on the Connections next to which the currently used internet connection will be displayed.
7. This will display a window with the information of the network adapter that you are currently using to connect to the internet.
8. Here you will see the speed section and next to it the speed of your network adapter.
Note: It should be noted that if you are connected to the Internet via WiFi, the information displayed will be the maximum speed of the Wireless adapter. On the other hand, if you are connected to the internet via cable, the speed shown will be that of the Ethernet adapter.
9. The speed shown is the maximum speed of your network adapter, so you will not be able to browse the Internet at a speed higher than that which this adapter allows, even if the contracted speed is higher.
In our example, as you can see in the images in this post, our adapter supports a maximum speed of 144.4 MBps (megabytes per second). This means that if we hire a 600 Mbps internet connection to connect to the internet only with this computer, the truth is that it makes no sense since we will be wasting 455.6 Mbps. Perhaps it is good to hire a lower internet speed and thus save money on your internet bill without your actual maximum speed being compromised at all.
