Microsoft has been working on improving the way you provide updates to its Windows 10 operating system to its users. So far, your in-place Windows 10 updates haven’t worked that well. Users often run into problems and the strangest errors. When you do an in-place update, Windows 10 downloads files to your system, which requires some space. However, to install the update, some additional space is also required to complete the update successfully.

The hard disk of your computer must have some free space if you want to update your Windows 10. The truth is that Microsoft does not specify the exact amount of free space that the user must have on his hard disk, however, it is often considered sufficient 10GB.
However, to solve situations in which Windows 10 users cannot update it due to lack of storage space, Microsoft has just added in its latest version 1903 a new function called: Reserve Storage.
What this function does is to reserve a little storage space on your hard drive so that when Microsoft releases a new update, the user is always sure that they can proceed with the installation of the update. During an update, that space will be used to avoid certain problems (although obviously not all).
Next, we want to show you step by step how to enable or disable Reserved Space in Windows 10 to allow operating system updates without problems or errors:
How to enable or disable Reserve Storage in Windows 10, to allow updating the system when you do not have enough free space.
Reserve storage is enabled by default when we perform a clean installation of Windows 10 version 1903 or later. However, in the event that you have not installed Windows 10 from scratch and therefore the Reserve Storage option is disabled, you should know that you can always activate it at any time. For this you will have to follow the following steps:
– Open Windows search and enter the following term: Regedit
– When the tool Windows Registry Editor is displayed among the search results you must click with the right button of your mouse to line followed by selecting the option: Execute as an administrator.
– Once the Windows registry editor is displayed, you should access the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionReserveManager
– In the right part of the window you will have to double click on the key ShippedWithReserves. This will open a small window in which you will have to configure the Value Information field with the number:
- 1 if you want to activate it.
- 0 if you want to disable it.
– Now you can close the Windows registry editor and then restart your Windows computer.
Note: After the restart of your computer, the reserved space will not be “reserved immediately”, but you will have to wait for another update.
The reserved space must appear within the Settings application, specifically in: Settings> System> Storage> System and Reserved. This will be where you can view the reserved storage along with the space occupied by the operating system.
The reserved storage is there to make updates much easier to install. It may seem unnecessary, but all devices need free space to update their firmware. Windows almost always runs on large hard drives, however on other occasions the Windows 10 operating system is installed on SSD drives which have a lower storage capacity. This is why users often have trouble with updates.
The amount of reserved storage may not be the same for all devices and does not include the space that the Windows.old folder will occupy. That folder alone can be over 20GB in size, but not having space for it will not result in an update failure. In other words, this folder does not count for the space necessary to update Windows 10.
