February 27, 2021 by whyisdown Leave a Comment

Spotify is not only a music streaming platform for mobile devices such as Android or iPhone, but it also has dedicated programs for desktop devices such as Windows 10 or the Web version for the browser. In the case of Windows 10, the integration of Spotify is so high that the operating system incorporates a control panel for music playback that is not to everyone’s liking.

Related: How to add your own music to Spotify and synchronize it with your mobile to listen to it offline.

When we use the Spotify program for Windows 10, we can control playback through a floating panel that is shown when we change the volume of the sound of our operating system on our computer using the keyboard. This can be of great use to owners of computers with touch screens.

However, there are many desktop computer users without touchscreens who do not want that control panel to be displayed on their computer. In this pop-up panel, the Play, Pause, Next and Previous controls are displayed along with the title, disc and cover of the disc that is currently playing in the Spotify program.

This pop-up control panel takes up too much space on the screen and many users can accidentally click on any of these controls causing your playback to be unwanted.

That said and regardless of the reason, below we want to show you step by step how to deactivate the Spotify floating control panel in Windows 10:

How to disable Spotify’s music playback overlay window in Windows 10

1. Open the Spotify program in Windows 10.

2. When the interface is displayed, you must click on the three ellipsis icon displayed in the upper left corner of the interface.

3. In the displayed menu you will have to go to: Edit> Preferences.

Important note: It should be noted that this function is not only for Spotify. In fact, in the case of using the Microsoft Edge Web browser, if we are playing any video, the floating control panel will also be shown when using any of the multimedia keys on your keyboard. However, the way to deactivate this control panel will be totally different and specific to this program.

February 25, 2021 by whyisdown Leave a Comment

The security of the electronic devices and programs that we use is something really important, especially if we share our computer with other users or family members. It should be noted that on our computer and especially our browser, we usually store a large amount of personal information that we either want to protect or we just want this to be the only one stored in your browser. To avoid this, you can, for example, prevent other users from creating profiles to Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser for Windows 10 and like the vast majority of web browsers, it allows you to create user profiles in which you store practically all your information. This allows users to take all their information with them to an Edge browser on any other computer.

When a user logs in with their profile in the Edge web browser, all their information will be automatically synchronized, being stored and available from this computer. Although it is true that this user can log out of his Edge profile as well as delete his profile from said browser, the truth is that sometimes this is usually forgotten and certain information is usually saved locally on your computer.

Turn off app update notifications

February 24, 2021 by whyisdown Leave a Comment

Windows 10 computers have an official application store that allows the installation of official apps that are fully integrated with the operating system. This store and apps work almost identically to how the apps and stores of mobile devices such as Android and iPhone do. But this is not all since they also share other aspects such as automatic updates or update notifications of Windows 10 apps.

know how to disable app update notifications in windows 10

Related: Solution: It appears that you do not have an applicable device linked to your Microsoft account.

Apps downloaded and installed from the official Windows 10 store are seamlessly integrated as well as any notifications from them. This also implies that the official app store integrates its notifications with the operating system’s notification system since this is also considered as one more Windows 10 app.

This means that if, for example, you have automatic updates of Windows 10 applications enabled in the official store, every time one of the apps installed on your operating system is updated, you will receive a notification whose message is displayed in the lower right corner from the screen.

This a priori is something beneficial since we will be constantly informed when each of the updates or any other action that the Windows 10 app store performs. However, there are many users who prefer that these actions continue to be carried out in the background without being notified, since it can distract them from what they are doing.

How to disable app update notifications from the Microsoft Official Store in Windows 10

1. Open the Settings app using the keyboard shortcut: Windows key + I

2. Go to the option: System

3. In the menu on the left side of the screen, you must select the option: Notifications and actions.

Face recognition in the Windows 10 Photos app: On / Off

February 23, 2021 by whyisdown Leave a Comment

The Windows 10 operating system has the Photos app installed by default. As can be deduced from its name, the Photos app is the default image and photo viewer with which you can open practically any type of image file. In addition, throughout the OS updates, the Photos app has been considerably improved with new functions, among which we can find facial recognition.

How to activate or deactivate facial recognition in the Windows 10 photos app

Related: How to resize images with the Photos app (Windows 10)

As you may already know, the Windows 10 Photos app, in addition to viewing photos, also allows you to organize them based on certain parameters for grouping them into albums. In addition, the Photos app integrates seamlessly with the Microsoft OneDrive cloud service. This means that you can gather and group all the images and videos from various devices (where you use the same Microsoft user account) in the same app.

But this is not all, since thanks to the Face Detection and Recognition function, it will allow you to identify which people appear in each of your photos and in this way to be able to organize / group them based on the people who are in those photos. The facial recognition feature of the Windows 10 Photos app is named after: People

The People function synchronizes the information of your contacts and uses it to detect these people in the photos or images displayed in the Windows 10 Photos app. After this detection and face recognition, the Photos app is able to group the photos they contain to the same person.

This function a priori may seem very useful, and it is, however, other aspects must be taken into account, such as privacy. It should be noted that this facial recognition technology can store different parameters of people’s faces and processed by Microsoft servers, so it could store them and use them for other purposes.

In addition, it is necessary to take into account the amount of memory that the Photos application can consume in Windows 10. This amount increases exponentially in the case of activating the People function of Photos, since the collection of the face parameters is also stored in your computer locally.

That said, below we show you step by step how to activate or deactivate the People function (facial recognition) in the Photos app of Windows 10:

Learn how to enable or disable the People function (facial recognition) in the Windows 10 Photos app.

1. Open the Windows Photos app which you can do through the search field or the start menu.

2. When the Photos app interface is displayed, you will have to click on the three ellipsis icon in the upper right corner.

3. In the drop-down menu you will have to select the option: Setting.

How to activate or deactivate the people function of the Windows 10 photos app

4. Now in the new screen you will have to scroll down until you find the section: Persons

5. Here you will find the switch that allows you to activate or deactivate the function:

By “turning on” the People settings, you agree to enable facial recognition that will automatically group people from your photos and videos. This data will be stored on your device. If you “disable” it, all facial grouping data on your device will be permanently removed. By enabling the People feature, you represent that you have all appropriate consents from the people of your photos and videos.

turn facial recognition on or off in the Windows 10 Photos app

6. Once you have activated or deactivated this function, you can close the application.

Important note: Remember that if you have activated the Person function of the photos app (recognition) in your images, you must have the consent of all the people who appear in said photos, otherwise you may be incurring an infringement against privacy.

How to detect Emotet malware on your Windows 10 PC

February 23, 2021 by whyisdown Leave a Comment

You may have already heard about Emotet by now, but if not, you should know that it is a Malware / banking Trojan that is installed in your computer’s operating system such as Windows 10 in order to steal your banking details when you try to access to your online accounts. Once hackers get hold of your bank details through Emotet, they can transfer your funds to other bank accounts. This is the reason why it is advisable to check if your Windows computer is infected with Emotet and if so, delete it.

check your computer for emotet malware

Related: How to erase Cerber Ransomware and decrypt affected files. (Windows)

But this is not all, since Emotet is a malicious software that can be used as a launch pad for other malware. This means that if your computer is infected with Emotet, you can end up receiving many other infections such as:

– Persistent infections designed to launch payloads aggressively at startup and at regular intervals, making repair difficult.

– Theft of credentials, including the credentials of email and social media accounts, as well as passwords stored in web browsers.

– Account locks caused by malware attempting to spread internally over the network through brute force attacks using stolen credentials.

– Disabling security tools and programs such as Windows Defender or Avast.

– Impersonation of your email which allows the hacker to get the information from your Outlook contacts and then use these contacts to send Spam.

– Fraudulent transfers or withdrawals from your bank accounts by stealing your credentials.

Fortunately, there are several ways to detect if your computer is running Windows 10 and here are the best ones:

How to know if your Windows 10 computer is infected with Emotet malware.

Method 1: Use the specialized tool EmoCheck

Currently there is a tool specialized in detecting Emotet malware and best of all, it is completely free.

EmoCheck performs a deep and fast scan of your PC as well as being really easy to use.

The first thing we will have to do is download the tool from the following link:

Download Emocheck: https://github.com/JPCERTCC/EmoCheck/releases

Once on the page, you will have to choose the download according to the structure of your Windows 10 operating system:

  • X64 for Windows 10 32-bit
  • X86 for Windows 10 64-bit

Once the tool is downloaded, you will have to run the tool until the interface similar to that of the CMD is displayed.

Here all you have to do is press any of the keys on your computer.

check if the emotet malware has infected your windows 10 computer

This will run the scan and the tool’s interface may even disappear.

Now you will have to go to the same folder where the EmoCheck executable is located and right next to it you will find a .txt file

When you open the file in the notepad, you will see the information about whether your Windows 10 computer is infected or not.

scan your windows 10 computer for emotet malware

Method 2. Locate strange services within the Windows 10 Services application.

Emotet works by creating a service with a random name. This, in turn, tries to create another service with another random name. As such, if you see some strange service names popping up, it’s worth doing a deep scan of your operating system.

For this you will have to open Windows 10 task manager

Once here go to the tab: Services

detect emotet on your windows computer

In the list of services, you should look for those whose names are made up of only random numbers.

If you find them, you will have to disconnect your computer from the internet and carry out a deep scan with your antivirus program.

Method 3. Check that there are no strange movements in your accounts.

Even if you have an antivirus installed and the previous methods have been negative, it is worth taking a look at your accounts in case you will find any strange movement, especially if you usually use electronic banking a lot.

It is highly recommended to maintain a weekly movement check routine. As soon as you detect any strange movement, contact your bank as soon as possible and check again that your computer is free of Emotet. If necessary, take your computer to a specialist.
